Moving on...the day after Valentine's

Depending on how your Valentine's Day went, today may feel like the day after Christmas (meaning you had a great time, met someone new or have a great story to tell) or the day after learning that your best friend passed away (meaning that the marriage you tried desperately to save is no more).

Regardless of which side you are on, a divorce is likely part of your future. Like any major life change, planning is an essential part. You may feel as if nothing makes sense, and your world has been turned upside down and that life will never be the same. These feelings of uncertainty make planning ever more important. With this post, we will identify some important tips to help prepare for the process.

Be okay with divorce - This certainly may be easier said than done, because emotional wounds can take months (even years) to heal. But the reality is once a person has decided to move on, there is no turning back, so there is no sense in stopping your life wallowing in guilt. Just know that nothing in life is "permanent" and divorce is another example of it.

Get organized - This includes gathering bank statements, tax information, paystubs and loan information. Why is this important? A divorce is just as much a business transaction as it is an emotional change.

Keep things normal - This applies to how you treat children of divorce. Kids have an uncanny knack of knowing that things are not normal (or that something is going on). However, they are surprisingly resilient when they have the comfort of their routine to depend on.

If you have additional questions about preparing for divorce, an experienced family law attorney can help.
